You don’t need to go jogging to stay fit and healthy.

Video games

Believe it or not, but video games can actually help you stay active. I bought an old Xbox 360 with a Kinect motion sensor, and my wife and I have a lot of fun playing various sports and dancing games these days.

Many consoles can help you move more.

Here a few options:

  • Xbox 360 or Xbox One with a Kinect sensor
  • PlayStation Move
  • Nintendo Switch
  • Nintendo Wii
  • VR sets such as PlayStation VR or Oculus Rift

Working out

You don’t need a gym membership to work out. Instead, you can use the money saved from not going there, to set up a small home gym.

A set of kettlebells can be already enough for a good workout session. If you want more variety, you can always buy some dumbbells, med balls, and sandbags for weightlifting exercises, or something as simple as a jumping rope for your cardio workout.

A pull-up bar can be a great addition for calisthenics lovers and for stretching your upper-back muscles by hanging down on the bar.

If you don’t want to buy anything, you can always use your bodyweight for exercising. There are plenty of free apps and workout routines online. I personally love this Nike Training Club app.

Yoga

Starting with yoga is easy — you can get a yoga matt or even do it on a rug. Just download a yoga app such as Pocket Yoga or simply play a follow-along yoga video on YouTube.

Chores

Doing chores during these difficult times can be one of the best ways of moving your body and staying active — killing two birds with one stone — keeping your apartment tidy and your body moving.

Breaks

If you’re working from home, or if you spend a lot of time using devices, taking short breaks is essential.

Stand up from time to time, do some stretches, go to the kitchen to grab a glass of water.

If you own an Apple Watch or a similar wearable device, you can set up reminders to stand up, and when the watch knows that you’ve been sitting still for a long time, it’ll notify you.

If you have kids, I recommend you buy a couple of Nerf guns. Running around the house shooting and dodging soft bullets, while taking a break from the screens, is a great way for kids to stay active.

Adults could enjoy it too, especially if you are childish like me and don’t mind shooting your spouse 🙂.
